CHAPTER 17
Casandra
The woman who entered Lord Gregor and Lord Brewsterâs tavern room was none other than Casandra Morgensen, the illegitimate daughter of Royal Prince Gaston Falesto and Itza Morgensen. The Morgensen family were renowned merchants and owners of the Isles of Fratt and Isles of Vern. The family had trade agreements with two different Kingdoms, which helped provide security for their people in secret. In reality, Casandraâs mother was a hidden Koddy and granddaughter of the Koddy King, Tamon BâJen Noire. Casandra was her motherâs pride and her best spy into the Falesto Royal Family, although Gaston Falesto had been declared a traitor and was wanted for murder by the Falesto Emperor. Casandra grew up knowing her father, but also understanding his evil ways.
On the other hand, the deity of Quetza had an interest in the life of this child, the shaping of her life and her role in Quetzaâs future. Her value was more intertwined in the natural way of history than her familyâs origin. Casandra had been a child when she learned about the old ways. It was her own brother, Gallo, who started the chain of events by pushing her out of the family carriage onto the streets of Hushma City.
Her father, Prince Gaston, had Casandra for the summer and they were going on a holiday to her fatherâs castle. Casandraâs dad, traveling in the front carriage, didnât notice her tumbling from the rear carriage until they stopped for supper. The fact she survived the fall was a miracle in itself, but fortune favored her further, as a traveling merchant named Chaim (Pop) Tolenko found her and saved her from being taken by thugs soon after she landed on the streets of Hushma City.
Pop Tolenko and his sons fed her and cared for her injured leg. Pop and his children often talked about the old ways and it was from him she heard about the stories of how Quetza used to be before the war. Pop Tolenko returned Casandra to her mother at Casandraâs bidding. Her safe return to her mother, with Casandra singing Pop Tolenkoâs praises, granted the Tolenkos the promise of friendship from the Koddy Royal Family. Casandra never forgot what she had learned from Pop Tolenko. Later on, when she had the chance to release Opal, the Teacher-Magi, she took it without hesitation. If Casandra ever got another chance to see her adopted grandfather Pop, she hoped he would be proud of her.
But now, as an adult, Casandra worked for her grandfather, Tamon. And he had her doing a job in the city of Potano. She needed to play her role, but she still sought the truth.
Casandra couldnât believe the wealth of information she was gathering. Her father, Prince Gaston, would be so happy to have this information, but this was even more useful in the hands of her mother, Itza Morgensen, or her maternal grandfather, King Tamon. Her mother and grandfather had a great plan to bring down the Royal Falesto Family.
